Worker

In short and in plain language

A worker is a program that does its job in the background.

It handles tasks as they come in, such as sending emails.

After an update, it is usually started again.

Definition
A worker is a program process that waits in the background and works through incoming tasks. These can be requests to the web server or jobs from a queue. Shop systems use workers for sending mail, indexing and imports, for example. After an update, workers are usually restarted so that they use the new program code.
