ACME

Abbreviation for Automatic Certificate Management Environment

In short and in plain language

ACME is an open set of rules for certificates.

A server needs a certificate for safe links. With these rules, it asks for one by itself. It also renews it by itself.

So it is less easy for one to run out unseen. This can mean fewer outages.

Definition
ACME is an open protocol that lets servers request and renew certificates for encrypted connections automatically. This makes it less likely that certificates for shop and interface addresses expire unnoticed. Outages caused by expired certificates can be reduced this way.
